Tar and Chip – More Than Just an Affordable Alternative to Asphalt

At Standard Paving we mostly install hot mix asphalt paving. Its sleek, sophisticated slate black appearance and smooth surface is popular in urban areas. However, the further we get from D.C. and the closer we get to open areas and farms, the more our customers want us to install tar and chip paving. The unique “rustic” look of tar and chip paving (also known as chipseal) and its pebbly texture fits perfectly in the northern Virginia countryside.

Originally developed in New Zealand in the 1920s to provide paved roads to remote farming areas, it quickly caught on around the world and remains popular today. Why? Because it is less expensive than traditional asphalt paving. That’s why it’s a favorite with municipal street and road departments.

Tar and chip is made by embedding chip stone gravel into liquid asphalt. A roller compacts the mixture resulting in a rock hard, all weather surface that requires little to no maintenance. Asphalt, which is a mixture of asphalt cement, sand, and gravel, is made at a “batch plant” and ten needs to be transported to the job site. With tar and chip paving, the gravel and liquid asphalt are “assembled” right on the job site. And that’s the principal reason chipseal is less expensive than hot mix asphalt.

But tar and chip has another unique characteristic that attracts the eye of many customers. The color and texture of tar and chip paving depends on the color and size of the chip stone gravel used. If you have a colonial style or old South style home, its value will benefit from a driveway or lane whose color compliments the architectural style. Tar and chip paving can come in a sandy yellow, rustic orange , one of many other color combinations.

Tar and chip paving’s pebbly texture provides great traction for both pedestrians and vehicles in snowy or wet conditions. It’s a great way to turn that gravel track into a year-round road eliminating the dust clouds of summer and the mud holes of winter. It is a suitable material for use in repaving most existing asphalt or concrete surfaces. On the downside, tar and chip has a service life of 12 to 15 years or about half of that of hot mix asphalt.

Asphalt Installation:

Step 1

Paving

Our own full time experienced crew installs the asphalt with a heated self propelled paver and hand tools.

Step 2

Roller at work

The hot asphalt is compacted with an industrial, steel drum, vibrating roller, to form a hard surface.

Step 3

road construstion

The vertical edges are hand finished and compacted for maximum durability and neat appearance.

With Tar and Chip Paving, Experience Counts

Many residential asphalt paving contractors don’t even offer tar and chip paving. If you decide on chip seal, you want a crew with experienced hands to install it. Critical installation functions for hot mix asphalt are largely automated. Self-propelled, self-leveling paving machines are used with standard asphalt. Tar and chip require an experienced operator that knows how to put down the liquid asphalt and how much to put down. The same goes for the gravel. Family owned Standard Paving hasn’t forgotten how to do the job.
