Full Service Asphalt Paving Company, Asphalt Driveways | Parking Lots | Tar and Chip Paving
Standard Paving is equipped and has the resources to tackle any asphalt project large or small. Not surprisingly, we do a lot of asphalt driveway paving projects in Chantilly. Your asphalt driveway plays an important role in your home’s curb appeal and resale value. If your asphalt is cracked, crumbling, puddles water or is graying out, it’s pulling down the value of your investment.
We can fix that.
Call us. We will arrange for an experienced estimator to inspect your drive. If it is purely a question of aesthetics, we can fill cracks, potholes, and level up low spots. We then apply a beautiful dark sealant that will vastly improve the appearance of your asphalt driveway.
If the problem is more severe, we can repave it and make it like new. Repaving is required when you have deep cracks (greater than ¼”), large pot holes, and stretches of structurally unsound asphalt. If repaving your asphalt driveway is called for, the first thing we do is make sure we have a sound base. Structurally failed asphalt is cut out, holes and cracks are filled, and special attention is given to edges that may be crumbling. Once a solid base is established, a self-propelled, self-leveling paver lays down 300-degree hot asphalt. That’s followed by a compacting using an industrial, steel drum, vibrating roller, to form a hard surface. Edges are trimmed and compacted using hand tools.
If you are like most Chantilly homeowners, you are going to be amazed at how big an impact your new asphalt driveway has on the overall appearance of your property. Typically, after 24 hours, the asphalt has cured enough to drive on. We recommend that you wait six months and then have us apply an asphalt sealant to protect the new drive from UV rays, deicing chemicals and other damaging elements. After the initial sealant application, we recommend it be applied again once every three years to get the full life out of your new asphalt driveway. By the way, it should last 20 to 30 years.

Tar and Chip Paving – The Low-Cost Alternative to Hot Asphalt Paving
Tar and chip paving, also known as macadam or chip seal, is a paving process that was developed over 100 years ago as a means to pave rural roads that were outside the service areas of hot asphalt batch plants. The method is still used today even though there are plenty of asphalt batch plants. The principal reason it is so popular with state and county road crews is the cost. Tar and chip paving is significantly less expensive than hot asphalt.
Just because it’s less expensive, does not mean that tar and chip paving is any less viable a surface than hot mix asphalt. What it is, is a different color and texture.
Tar and chip is composed of an asphalt emulsion (liquid asphalt) and gravel. The liquid asphalt is laid down by an asphalt distributor truck followed by a dump truck that puts down gravel to a specific depth. These trucks are followed by a roller that embeds the gravel into the asphalt and creates a hard, all weather surface.
Hot asphalt results in a smooth, sleek, black surface. With tar and chip, both the texture and color depend on the size and color of the gravel used. Common chip gravel is grayish and the surface it creates is crunchy and gray. However, if you change the color and size of the gravel, you can just as easily have a smooth, rustic burnt orange. Some landscape architects specify the use of tar and chip for lanes, driveways, and turnouts.
Tar and chip paving can be tricky. When we install hot asphalt we use a state-of-the-art, self-leveling paver that takes much of the guess work out of the process. Driving a truck and putting down a uniform layer of liquid asphalt or gravel takes a lot of experience to do right. Not many asphalt paving companies in the Chantilly area have that experience but standard paving does. If you want to explore this alternative, give us a call today.
