Thirty Years of Professional Asphalt Contractor Services

We are a family owned business currently in our second generation of management. You can’t knock success and we continue to operate using the same philosophy of our founders. “Take care of the customer, he’s the reason you get to go to work in the morning, and deliver an exceptional, affordable, product.” That approach has worked for a lot of years and we have no intention of messing with it.

But affordable and exceptional work doesn’t happen by accident. At Standard Paving we are organized, staffed, and equipped to deliver on the promise. Here’s what we mean:

  • In Virginia, licensing is often a gray area where some contractors try to scrimp by. At Standard Paving we don’t take shortcuts on anything. We hold a Virginia Class A Contractor license and we are in full compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • We are a responsible business. We carry $2 million in general liability insurance and have coverage for workman’s compensation. If a worker is injured on your project, our coverage takes care of the expense, not your liability insurance.
  • We don’t subcontract any part of a job. We own all our equipment including self-leveling pavers, vibrating asphalt rollers, asphalt distributor trucks, excavation equipment, dump trucks etc.
  • Most importantly, all our crews are made up of talented, dedicated employees committed to customer satisfaction. They take great pride in their work and you’re the one who ultimately benefits from that pride.

At the end of the day, it’s our crews and their willingness to work non-stop through the heat, their attention to detail, and their insistence on perfection, that make Standard Paving asphalt driveways, parking lots, private roads, or tar and gravel lanes so exceptional.

Full Service Sterling Contractor – Asphalt Driveway, Asphalt Parking Lot, Tar and Chip Paving, Asphalt Surface Maintenance

Standard Paving is equipped and has the resources to tackle any asphalt project large or small. Not surprisingly, we do a lot of asphalt driveway paving projects in Sterling. Your asphalt driveway plays an important part in your home’s curb appeal and resale value. If your driveway is cracked, crumbling, puddles water or is graying out, it’s pulling down the value of your investment.

We can help you correct that.

When you call us, we will arrange for an experienced estimator to inspect your drive. If it is purely a question of aesthetics, we can fill cracks, potholes, and level up low spots, and then apply a beautiful dark sealant that will make your asphalt driveway look nearly new.

If the problem is more severe, we can repave it and make it like new. If repaving your asphalt driveway is called for, the first thing we do is make sure we have a sound base. Structurally failed asphalt is cut out, holes and cracks are filled, and special attention is given to edges that may be crumbling. Once we have a solid base we bring in a self-propelled paver to lay down 300-degree hot asphalt. That’s followed by an industrial, steel drum, vibrating roller, to form a hard surface. Edges are trimmed and compacted using hand tools.

When it’s done, you are going to be amazed at how big an impact your new asphalt driveway has on the overall appearance of your house. Typically, after 24 hours, the asphalt has cured enough to drive on. We recommend that you wait six months and then have us apply an asphalt sealant to protect the new drive from UV rays, deicing chemicals and other damaging elements. After the initial sealant application, we recommend it be applied again once every three years to get the full life out of your new asphalt driveway. By the way, it should last 20+ years.

Tar and Chip Paving – An Alternative to Asphalt

In Sterling, many homeowners have opted for a more rustic looking alternative to hot asphalt driveways and parking lots. Tar and chip paving has been around for more than a century and still remains a popular method of paving. It varies from traditional asphalt paving in that its components, liquid asphalt and chipped gravel, are applied separately rather than in one pass like premixed asphalt.

Tar and chip paving, also known as chipseal and macadam, is lighter in color and has a “crunchier” texture. It’s commonly used in rural areas where access to an asphalt batch plant is limited. However, it is also aesthetically pleasing and looks absolutely amazing when used on a property or home that strives for a country or rustic look.

Preparation for tar and chip paving is similar to that done for hot asphalt. Both paving materials need a solid base to start with. When the base is prepared, an asphalt distributor truck will put down an evenly applied layer of asphalt liquid or tar. Following that is a truck that lays down an even layer of chipped gravel. The gravel is embedded into the tar by a compressor turning the mixture into a rock hard, all weather, zero maintenance surface.
