Best Asphalt Paving Company Serving Lorton, VA
If you are a Lorton, VA homeowner and your asphalt driveway is detracting from your property’s curb appeal because of potholes or crumbling edges, at some point you will need an asphalt paving contractor to restore your home’s value.
Asphalt driveways have an enormous impact on the overall appearance of a house. When they are in great shape, they are a source of pride in ownership and they enhance the value of the property. But when they start to fail, the only thing that fades faster than your pride is the resale value of your home.
A professionally installed and maintained asphalt driveway has a service life of 20 to 30 years or more. So why is yours falling apart now? Odds are the problems stem from an improperly prepared subbase. The other major cause is the asphalt itself. Asphalt is a petroleum product and its chemical composition is subject to compromise through excessive UV exposure, excessive exposure to moisture (puddling), and exposure to automotive fluids. If the mix is incorrect, if it is improperly compacted, and if it is not protected from the elements with a sealant, it can structurally fail.
To fix your drive, you are going to need a professional asphalt paving company you can trust. How to Choose a Lorton Asphalt Driveway Paving Company
At Standard Paving we have been serving Lorton, Woodbridge, Springfield and other communities in northern Virginia for over 30 years. Obviously, we want your business. But we also want you to be confident in our capabilities and business practices. To help you get to that point, we’ve put together 5 key evaluations you should apply to any asphalt paving company including us.
- License. In Virginia contractor licenses are something of a grey area with different levels of responsibility and liability. At Standard Paving we hold a Class A Contractor license while some of our competition have B or C licenses or no licenses at all. This is a shortcut to lower costs and liability exposure.
- Adequate Insurance. Most people assume that the companies they deal with are insured. But that’s not always true, particularly in the paving business. Standard Paving is happy to show you a certificate proving we carry $2 million in liability and, this is important, workers compensation on our crews. Work Comp is expensive. Not having it is a way to cut costs for the contractor, but it also opens the customer up to exposure. If a worker is injured on your property, and there is no workers compensation, that worker can tap the liability coverage on your homeowner policy or your business’s premise liability coverage.
- Use of Contractors and Rental Equipment. Project management is far simpler and more efficient when a contractor controls all of the elements. At Standard Paving our crews are made up of our own highly skilled employees and we give them the latest in company owned asphalt paving technology and equipment to get the job done professionally. We don’t rely on any subcontractors for labor or equipment.
- Time in Business. Asphalt paving requires a heavy investment if you are going to own your own equipment. Dump trucks, rollers, levelers, spreaders and other gear is not inexpensive. That’s another way to say the threshold to enter this business is not low unless you cut corners. Standard Paving is a family business now in its second generation of management. You don’t last that long unless you deliver the quality work and service you promise the customer.
- Pricing and Pride. Get a guaranteed fixed price. Do not accept hidden costs or charges made after the job is done. If the asphalt paving contractor has confidence in their work, they’ll offer a warranty. We offer a full year warranty at Standard Paving.
Quizzing a contractor on these points takes a bit of time and may seem intrusive. But professional asphalt paving contractors expect to be asked the questions and have no problem answering them.
Asphalt Installation:
Standard Paving Asphalt Driveway Services
There’s more than one way to restore an asphalt driveway. Don’t pay for paving services you don’t need.
- Repair and Resurfacing. If your Lorton asphalt driveway has shallow cracks (less than ¼” deep) we can fill the cracks, compress the surface and apply a sealant to protect the asphalt from the elements. If the shallow cracks are extensive, it may require grinding off the top layer of asphalt, air blowing the surface, and installing a new layer of asphalt. Either way, your drive will be returned to like new condition.
- Repaving Asphalt Driveways. If you have deep cracks, potholes or crumbling edges, repaving may be the solution. Our skilled crew will identify and cut out failed asphalt. Low spots will be leveled up. Loose asphalt will be removed and disposed of. A self-leveling paver will be used to install a new layer of hot mix asphalt. Edges will be hand trimmed and compacted. A commercial grade vibrating roller compresses the surface ensuring a solid bond with the existing asphalt.
- Replacing Asphalt Driveways. This is the most extreme (and costly) process to address an asphalt surface. If the driveway is falling apart and “graying out” our crew will use excavation equipment to remove and dispose of the old asphalt. The subbase will then be properly prepared with the addition of new material, drainage where needed, and then firmly compacted. New asphalt is then installed and compacted. This is essentially the same as installing new construction.
- Tar and Chip Driveways. An alternative to Asphalt is a paving process called tar and chip paving. It is a mixture of liquid asphalt and gravel and is popular among municipal, county, and state road departments because of its relatively low cost. Tar and chip produces an all weather surface that requires little to no maintenance and is a viable alternative to hot mix asphalt. You can even change the color by changing the color and size of the gravel used, Standard Paving is one of the few private paving companies that has extensive experience with this process.
